Whitgift musicians were out in full force yesterday, to showcase their musical talents in the School’s highly-anticipated Autumn Collection Concert. The annual event, always one of the highlights of the Michaelmas Term, did not disappoint, welcoming a ‘sold-out’ audience to Big School, for the evening of musical entertainment.
The Corps of Drums kicked off the proceedings, performing a number of pieces, including their ever-popular glow-in-the-dark number, to a delighted audience.
The brass players were up next; Top Trumps and The Whitgift Ten troupes, comprised mostly of players who only took up their instrument since starting at Whitgift. They were followed by the Percussion Ensemble, with a rendition of the aptly-named Trash Cancerto.
Spirits remained high, as Whitgift A Cappella presented an arrangement of the Billy Joel classic, Uptown Girl, and the audience was treated to an expertly-played, 60-second solo trumpet number. Whitgift String Orchestra performed a captivating arrangement of The Lord of the Dance, with Whitgift Symphony Orchestra also providing an impressive Cello Concerto movement.
The Soul Choir, accompanied by the Soul Choir Band, delivered a charming version of Stand By Me, before Whitgift’s First Form Choir took centre stage for the finale, as has become tradition at the Autumn Collection; completing the evening’s line-up with their upbeat and moving renditions of Pharrell Williams’ Happy, and the Lion King classic, The Circle of Life.
Earlier in the day, Whitgift performers put on a superb show for our Primary Project visitors; boys and girls from the local primary schools enthusiastically bopping along to the eclectic programme, a great morning of musical education.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped coordinate on the day, as well as for all the rehearsals – the hard work definitely paid off for what was a truly special event. We look forward to hearing more from these talented Whitgift musicians over the coming year.
