Table Tennis England announced, during half term, their teams for the 2018 International School Sport Federation (ISF) World Schools’ Table Tennis Championships. Whitgift is delighted that George Hazell, James Smith, Jason Kwok and Reiss Vydelingum and were chosen, against fierce competition, as the England boys’ school team.
The 16- and 17-year-olds, who make up the Whitgift U19 table tennis team, have been unwavering in their desire to realise their national title ambitions. After winning the London South Championships (without dropping a match), they then competed in the Jack Petchey National Zone Finals, at the beginning of this year. In March, the boys qualified for the U19 ESTTA Regional Championships, followed by qualification for the coveted national finals. Whitgift won 5-3 against the 2016 U19 ESTTA winners, Harefield Academy, with some of the best table tennis played on the day.
Mr Simon Beck, Whitgift’s Master in Charge of Table Tennis, commented, “The team, under the guidance of Whitgift’s Head Table Tennis Coach, Mr Goran Maric, have trained diligently for a number of years to gain this fantastic honour. Winning the U19 ESTTA title certainly helped with the selection, but the boys’ individual national honours also played a significant part. We are immensely grateful to Table Tennis England for the faith they have shown in us. The real hard work now starts in raising our game to an international level, where we will compete against the very best schoolboy players in the world.”
Whitgift wishes the boys all the best of luck at the ISF World Schools’ Championships, which will take place from 8-14 April, in Malta.
