International Chess Master and Sixth Form Whitgift pupil, Yang-Fan Zhou, last week organised a simultaneous chess exhibition against 30 chess players to raise money for the England Youth Chess Team’s participation in the World Youth Chess Championships in Brazil later on this year.

The British U18 Champion, and 10th seed in his age group, played his Whitgift peers and teachers for a total of 1 hour 10 minutes before knocking out all of his opponents. The first person was eliminated from the game in a swift 10 minutes to the incredulity of the participants and spectators.

Mr Deliss, Economics and Business Studies teacher, was the last teacher standing against Yang-Fan’s onslaught and Yang-Fan’s 11 year-old brother, Yang-Jian, a successful chess player in his own right with the British U11 champion title under his belt, was the last opponent to hold out against the Chess Master.

Although Yang-Fan’s first exhibition of this kind, it was a great success with £200 raised and the possibility of future exhibitions with local schools.
