Eighteen Whitgift boys were amongst the hundreds of young athletes contesting the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace at the weekend. The competition was the climax of a series of semi-finals across the country.
Adam Bambroffe (pictured) was Whitgift's highest individual finisher, winning the silver medal in a field of 65 Year 6 boys whilst also achieving the fastest run time. Other top 10 individual places went to Joshua Miller finishing in fifth place in Year 9, Henry Choong collecting the bronze medal in Year 10, Freddie Benians finishing seventh in Year 7 and Tom Lees in sixth place in the Sixth Form category. Freddie also managed to record the fastest swim time for his age group with an impressive 28.06 for the 50m freestyle.
In the team events, two of Whitgift's four teams took the national title. The Year 9 boys - Joshua Miller, Mitchell Goff and Ocean Schwartz - finished nearly 500 points clear of their nearest rivals whilst the Year 10 team of Henry Choong, David Pearson and Josh Haasz managed to hold off a very strong Millfield team. The Year 7 team collected the bronze whilst Year 8s finished the day in fifth place.
