Last Friday, Whitgift School welcomed General Sir Peter Wall, KCB, CBE and Chief of the General Staff, to inspect the Combined Cadet Force. General Wall is an Old Whitgiftian and last visited Whitgift in 2004, when he was General Officer Commanding the 1st Armoured Division in Iraq. General Wall arrived by helicopter shortly after the arrival of an Apache Helicopter that stayed all afternoon.
General Wall inspected the Guard of Honour, under James Margetson, and the Corps of Drums, under Drum Major Brett Milotte, in their 107th year. He then saw canoeing in the swimming pool and the RAF Flight Simulator, and he met Mark Collard, who has successfully completed his RAF Scholarship Advanced Gliding Course, and Lawrence Sutton, a Sixth Form RAF Scholarship winner. He saw boys shooting on the indoor range, using the climbing wall, the Obstacle Course and other CCF activities. The day was rounded off with the tug of war competition, command task races, the Platoon Attack and the Beating of Retreat by the Corps of Drums.
General Wall praised Whitgift for its partnerships with St Andrew's School and Thomas More School, which allows students from both schools to participate in CCF activities. He also commended the enthusiasm of all the boys, the breadth of activities and the excellent facilities. He concluded by saying that he thought the Whitgift CCF was fantastic.
