The Climbing Club
The Climbing Club is open to all boys from the Lower Fifth to the Upper Sixth. Two sessions are held each week from 15:45 until 18:00 at a specialist bouldering centre called Craggy Island near Sutton.
Bouldering is a low-level, rope-free sport that can be incredibly technical and athletically demanding. Routes are graded according to their difficulty and boys progress through the various climbs with the aid of progression charts supplied by the centre. Due to the range of climbs available at the centre, the Club is suitable for beginners through to advanced climbers.
On joining the Club, boys are given a complimentary chalk bag and a good supply of chalk. They may also use climbing shoes supplied by the Outdoor Education Department although boys should be looking to purchase their own shoes as they develop.
A group of boys compete in the Independent Schools climbing competition each year and the added dimension of competition has a very positive impact upon technique progression and endurance.
