The Photography Club concentrates on traditional photography techniques, darkroom work and the art of photography: composition, lighting, exposure and development. It is an ideal activity for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Michaelmas Term

In the Michaelmas Term, we concentrate on the basic skills required to take, develop and print photographs. This is broken down into a series of alternating weeks, exploring the taking of photographs and the printer’s art, as follows:

  • Introduction to the camera – focus and exposure
  • The darkroom – safety, basic theory and photograms
  • Composition
  • Assessing exposure for printing – test strips
  • Lighting
  • Producing and assessing a print
  • Depth of field
  • Dodging and burning

Lent Term

Lent Term is designed to allow students to have more creativity with their photography. The aim of the term is for boys to produce a single, fine art print with which they are happy, having explored the technical and creative paths to its completion.

Topics explored include:

  • Double exposure
  • Sandwiched negatives
  • Motion blur
  • Portraiture
  • Artificial lighting
  • Dynamic range
