Resource Centres

There are many well-equipped departmental libraries and resource centres, providing boys with an extensive range of learning materials.

The main library has a working stock of well over 20,000 volumes, an extensive multimedia collection and Internet access. The accommodation provides both a quiet area for individual study and research and a resource centre for academic subjects with access to national databases.

An Archive, with an important collection of historic documents, photographs, records and memorabilia adjoins the main Library, as does one of the School's computer centres which can be used for individual or group work.

There are additional specialised facilities for particular subjects and year groups such as an attractive Lower School Library and the large study area for the Sixth Form.

FHG Percy
Essay
Prize

The subjects for 2008 are:
Alistair Cooke
Ian Fleming
Victor Feather
Osbert Lancaster
David Lean

FHG Percy was a pupil at Whitgift (1922–30), taught French and English at the School from 1937–1976 (serving overseas with the Royal West Kent Regt. during WWII) and was the Whitgift Archivist until 2002; in 1976 he wrote A History of Whitgift School, revised 1991.

In recognition of his enormous contribution to Whitgift over the years, his
family has decided to offer a new annual essay prize in memory of him. This coincides with their generous donation of the Dictionary of National Biography to the Raeburn Library, and the subject of the essay will be biographical.

Each year, five famous Britons from the DNB who were all born 100 years ago will be nominated; entrants will select one of the names nominated and write an essay of between 1000 and 1500 words with the title “The Legacy of X Today”. The author will be free to interpret the topic in any way he sees fit.

The competition is open to pupils currently in the Fifth and Sixth Forms at
Whitgift. The closing date for entries was April 10th 2008. The essays will be judged by members of FHG Percy’s family and a member of the teaching staff, and the winner announced in early May. (The judges may, at their discretion, award 2nd and 3rd prizes depending on the quality of the entries).

The winner will receive a prize of £250 and a special presentation will be made later in the Trinity Term.

Further details are available from the Raeburn Library and Mr Brown.
