Art and Design

AIMS

The Art and Design department at Whitgift is a thriving hub of creativity, where students are encouraged to explore their artistic potential and develop a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of art. Our department is dedicated to nurturing each student's individual talents, allowing them to grow in confidence and artistic ability. Through a comprehensive curriculum that emphasises the formal elements of art, we aim to enhance students' critical, cultural, and historical understanding while fostering a positive and supportive environment that encourages self-expression and creativity.

With four specialist Art teachers and a dedicated Art technician, the department boasts impressive facilities including four general art studios, a sculpture studio, a kiln room, a darkroom, printmaking and silk-screen printing resources, and a computer suite. In the Junior Years, students engage in an intense, skills-based programme that covers four key areas: Drawing, Printmaking, Mixed Media, and Sculpture. This diverse curriculum allows students to experiment and hone their skills in various mediums such as painting, lino cutting, dry point etching, collage, typography, graphic design, film photography, darkroom processes, clay work, wire sculpting, textiles, and craft. As they progress, students are encouraged to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, building a comprehensive portfolio that reflects their growing expertise.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Whitgift's Art and Design department offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities to further enhance students' artistic experience. An extensive list of clubs and societies is available, including 3D Club, Ceramics Club, Senior Photography Society, Painting Masterclass, Scholars Art Society, and Drawing Club. These co-curricular activities allow students to explore new techniques, work on personal projects, and collaborate with peers who share their passion for art.

For GCSE and A Level students, after-school clinic sessions are held twice a week, providing additional support and guidance as they work on their projects. The department also actively encourages students to submit their work to national art competitions, including prestigious events such as the Saatchi Gallery Arts Prize for Schools, the Young Photographer of the Year award (run by the Rotary Club), and the Doodle for Google awards. These opportunities not only showcase students' talents on a larger stage but also inspire them to strive for excellence in their artistic pursuits.
