Biology

Aims

The Biology department at Whitgift is committed to nurturing a deep understanding of the life sciences, emphasising their pivotal role in addressing the global challenges that students will encounter in their future. Through a curriculum that spans from molecular biology to ecosystems, we aim to foster a genuine interest in the living world, cultivating students into biologically literate global citizens. Our approach ensures that pupils become well-versed in the principles of the scientific method, developing critical thinking skills that are essential for analysing and solving complex biological problems.

At Whitgift, Biology education goes beyond the classroom. We place a strong emphasis on building transferable skills, such as resilience and creativity, which empower students to approach the world with a problem-solving mindset. By engaging with real-world biological issues, students learn to apply scientific concepts in innovative ways, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to society.

Enrichment opportunities

The Whitgift Biomedical Science Diploma, available to Lower Sixth students, offers an in-depth exploration of biomedical sciences, providing a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing careers in healthcare and research. Field trips to Devon, designed for A Level students, offer hands-on field study experiences, where students can observe and analyse ecological systems in a natural setting. Additionally, our Animal Club and Horticultural Club allow students to engage with biology outside the classroom, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world and enhancing their understanding of biological processes. These opportunities are integral to our mission of developing well-rounded, scientifically literate individuals ready to tackle the challenges of the future.
