Chemistry

AIMS

The Chemistry department at Whitgift is committed to developing a deep understanding of how chemistry impacts society, fostering an appreciation for the real-life applications of science, including their everyday, industrial, and environmental aspects. Our curriculum is designed to build students' confidence in mastering chemical facts, concepts, and principles by exploring the unifying themes and patterns that define the subject. Through a blend of independent and collaborative work, students are encouraged to approach problem-solving logically, engaging as part of a thoughtful scientific community.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

To further enhance their learning, students in the Chemistry department are encouraged to participate in a variety of enrichment activities. These include attending 'Science in Action' lectures held in London, which provide insights into the latest scientific developments and their practical applications. Additionally, students can engage in lectures that explore 'Superhero Science,' where they can delve into the chemistry behind popular superhero powers.

Competitions also play a key role in the department's enrichment offerings. Students are invited to form teams and enter the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Chemistry competition, where they can test their knowledge and skills against peers from other schools. They can also participate in the RSC's 'Top of the Bench' competition, which is designed to challenge and inspire young chemists. These opportunities not only extend students' learning beyond the classroom but also foster a sense of achievement and camaraderie among participants.
