Computer Science
AIMS
In an era increasingly defined by digital technology, the Computer Science department at Whitgift is committed to equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. Our courses are designed to address the future of work, where many traditional roles may be automated or replaced by new technologies. Through a dynamic curriculum that covers a wide range of topics - including app development, database design, programming, website creation, game development, cybersecurity, and hardware - students gain valuable experience in both theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. The programme emphasises problem-solving and independence, encouraging students to navigate complex challenges and develop innovative solutions on their own.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
To complement our core curriculum, the Computer Science department offers a variety of enrichment opportunities that allow students to deepen their understanding and apply their skills in exciting ways. Our new modules on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning introduce students to foundational concepts and practical applications of these technologies, including ethical considerations and real-world implications.
Students can also engage in national and international coding competitions such as the UK Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, Informatics Olympiad, and Algorithmic Olympiad. These events provide a platform for students to showcase their problem-solving and coding skills, fostering a competitive spirit and recognizing their achievements.
Additionally, our Robotics Club gives students the chance to build and program robots, merging coding skills with mechanical engineering and teamwork. The Game Development Club allows students to design, code, and test their own video games, providing a creative outlet for their technical skills. Curriculum enhancements, such as modules on emerging technologies like blockchain, virtual reality (VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT), keep students at the forefront of technological advancements and prepare them for future trends. Through these varied opportunities, Whitgift’s Computer Science department ensures that students are not only adept in their technical skills but also well-prepared for the digital challenges of tomorrow.
