English Literature
AIMS
The English Literature department at Whitgift is committed to fostering a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling and literary exploration. The curriculum aims to develop a global perspective through the study of diverse texts, encouraging students to engage with different cultures, viewpoints, and ideas. In the Junior Years, pupils are introduced to a broad range of challenging and exciting literature, enhancing their critical thinking, writing, and communication skills. Through lively discussion, drama, and creative writing, students are encouraged to develop an enquiring enthusiasm for English that will stay with them for life.
The study of English Literature at Whitgift is designed not only to cultivate academic excellence but also to inspire a love for reading and writing, enabling pupils to interpret the world around them through the lens of literature. By engaging with both classic and contemporary works, students gain a nuanced understanding of human experiences and emotions, preparing them for further study and the wider world.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The English Literature department offers a variety of enrichment opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom. Yearly residential trips to literary festivals and visits to Stratford-upon-Avon immerse students in the world of literature and drama, allowing them to experience the cultural and historical significance of the works they study. In addition, the School hosts its own Junior Literary Festival, where authors are invited to lead workshops and share their insights into the craft of writing.
Shakespeare plays a central role in the curriculum, with the annual Second Form Shakespeare evening offering students the opportunity to perform abridged versions of his works. Literary Societies tailored to each year group encourage further engagement with literature, while the Journalism, Play Writing, Play Reading, and Film Societies provide additional avenues for students to explore their creative and analytical skills. These activities help students connect with literature on a personal level, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the subject.
