AIMS

At Whitgift, the French department is dedicated to igniting a passion for the French language among our students. Our mission is to foster a deep-seated interest in languages and a nuanced appreciation of cultural diversity, which will prepare students to thrive in an increasingly globalised society. Through a comprehensive and challenging curriculum, we emphasise the cognitive benefits of language learning and strive to enhance students' mastery of French while also deepening their understanding of English. We are particularly proud of our track record in motivating students to continue their language studies into the Sixth Form, with around 50% opting to study a language at this level and many pursuing higher education in languages.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

To enrich the learning experience, the French department offers a range of dynamic opportunities that immerse students in French culture and language. One of the highlights is the annual exchange program to Toulouse, which provides students with an immersive experience in a French-speaking environment. This exchange helps students to practice their language skills and gain firsthand insights into French culture.

Additionally, our students can participate in the Joutes Oratoires, a national debating competition where they engage in rigorous debates, enhancing their language proficiency and public speaking skills. The department also organises work experience placements in France, allowing students to apply their language skills in real-world settings and gain valuable professional experience. A residential trip to Brussels further expands students' exposure to Francophone culture and institutions, while the French Ciné Club offers a platform for students to explore French cinema, deepening their cultural and linguistic understanding. These enriching activities complement the academic curriculum, providing students with a well-rounded education in French language and culture.
