Geography

AIMS

Geography at Whitgift is designed to prepare students to address the pressing issues of today and anticipate those of tomorrow. This dynamic subject offers a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interactions between humans and the physical environment. By integrating knowledge from various disciplines, geography equips students with the skills to critically analyse a wide range of sources and perspectives. Our curriculum explores diverse topics, from the impact of the Earth’s orbit on climate over millennia to contemporary debates on energy security and strategies to bridge the development gap. Through this multifaceted approach, students gain both the analytical tools and the broader understanding necessary to tackle global challenges.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

We also offer a range of enrichment activities that deepen students' engagement with geography. Every two years, we organise an international trip for the Middle Years and Sixth Form, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts and explore geographical phenomena firsthand.

Our diverse Junior Years' curriculum fosters an inquiry-based approach, helping younger students understand the connections between the physical and human aspects of geography. This foundation is built upon in our Junior and Senior Geography Societies, which offer a variety of activities including geographical skills workshops, academic lectures, and UK-based field trips. These societies provide students with opportunities to explore contemporary geographical issues, further enhancing their understanding and passion for the subject. Through these experiences, students not only expand their academic knowledge but also develop practical skills that are crucial for addressing real-world geographical challenges.
