AIMS
The German department at Whitgift is dedicated to cultivating a passion for the German language and an appreciation for German-speaking cultures. Our goal is to provide students with the skills and insights needed to navigate a globalised world effectively. We deliver a rigorous language curriculum designed to enhance cognitive abilities and deepen students' understanding of English, all while developing their fluency in German. Our approach not only fosters linguistic proficiency but also encourages students to engage critically with cultural contexts. We are especially proud of our efforts to inspire students to continue studying German into the Sixth Form, with around 50% choosing to study a language at this level and many pursuing advanced degrees in languages.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
To complement the academic curriculum, the German department offers a variety of enrichment activities that immerse students in the German language and culture. One notable opportunity is participation in the Oxford German Olympiad, a national competition that invites students to creatively express themselves in German through writing or filming. This competition provides a platform for students to showcase their language skills and creativity.
Additionally, our students have the chance to enter the prestigious Stephen Spender Translation Prize competition, where top linguists from each Key Stage compete in translating complex texts. This national competition, held in the Trinity term, challenges students to demonstrate their advanced language skills and analytical abilities.
Our long-standing exchange programmes further enhance students' cultural experiences. Second Form students have the opportunity to participate in an exchange with a school in Nuremberg, while Third Form students can engage in an exchange with a school in Munich. These exchanges, which have been successfully running for over 20 years, allow students to immerse themselves in German culture and practice their language skills in authentic settings. Through these enriching experiences, students gain a deeper connection to the language and culture, preparing them for future academic and professional pursuits.
