History
AIMS
The History department at Whitgift is dedicated to sparking a passion for the past, inspiring students to explore historical events through rigorous study, critical questioning, and independent research. Our curriculum encourages students to develop a deep understanding of historical contexts, fostering their ability to construct well-informed, cogent arguments. Through this process, students enhance their verbal and written communication skills, becoming adept at presenting complex ideas clearly and persuasively. Our mission is to equip students not only for academic success but also for lifelong critical thinking, preparing them for public exams, university study, and future careers in fields requiring a solid foundation in historical analysis.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The History department offers a wide array of enrichment activities that go beyond the classroom, helping students delve deeper into the subject. The History and Politics Society meets every Friday lunchtime, where talks from students, staff, and guest speakers bring fresh insights into various historical topics. Every two years, the department also hosts a History Festival, and in 2023 welcomed historians like Dominic Sandbrook, Adam Smith, and Edward Shawcross. The next festival is set for 2025.
For those interested in writing, our school magazine, Pravda, publishes two issues each academic year, with articles contributed by students across all year groups. The department also runs an exciting Fifth Form trip to Berlin, offering students a unique opportunity to explore key historical sites that complement their IGCSE studies.
