Mandarin Chinese
AIMS
The Mandarin Chinese department at Whitgift is dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation for the Chinese language and culture among our students. Our primary goal is to instill a love of languages and to prepare students to thrive in an increasingly globalised world. Through rigorous language instruction, we ensure that students gain not only fluency in Mandarin but also a profound understanding of Chinese culture and its significance. This comprehensive approach to language learning provides cognitive benefits and enhances students' grasp of English as well. We take pride in our track record of encouraging students to continue their language studies into the Sixth Form, with around 50% of our pupils choosing to study a language at this advanced level and many pursuing degrees in languages thereafter.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
To enrich the language learning experience, the Mandarin Chinese department offers a range of opportunities that immerse students in Chinese culture and language. A key highlight is the annual trip for all Lower Sixth Form students to China, where they visit cities such as Shanghai, Yangshuo, and Chengdu. This trip provides students with invaluable exposure to the language in real-life contexts, deepening their cultural understanding and enhancing their linguistic skills.
These enrichment activities complement our rigorous academic curriculum, helping students to not only excel in their studies but also to develop a genuine connection with the Chinese language and its cultural nuances. Through these experiences, Whitgift students are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully in a globalised world, equipped with both the linguistic proficiency and cultural insight necessary for success.
