Maths and Further Maths

AIMS

The Mathematics and Further Mathematics programme at Whitgift provides students with a comprehensive mathematical education that emphasises clear reasoning and analytical problem-solving. Our dedicated team of teachers is passionate about delivering high-quality instruction, ensuring that all students are both challenged and supported, regardless of their starting ability. We encourage students to take intellectual risks, exploring various methods and approaches until they discover efficient solutions. This process not only strengthens their mathematical skills but also builds resilience and creativity, preparing them for future academic and professional challenges.

Our approach goes beyond just mastering mathematical techniques; we aim to instill a deep appreciation for the subject, encouraging students to see mathematics as a dynamic and engaging field. By fostering a positive and stimulating environment, we help students develop the confidence to tackle complex problems and the curiosity to explore new mathematical concepts. Whether through classroom instruction or extracurricular activities, our goal is to ensure that every student develops a strong mathematical foundation and a lifelong love for the subject.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Whitgift offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities designed to enhance students' mathematical experience and broaden their horizons. For students of all year groups, we have active Maths societies that provide a platform for exploring topics beyond the standard curriculum. Our students regularly attend specialised lecture trips, such as the 'Maths in Action' event for the top set in the Fourth Form and the 'Maths Fest' for Lower Sixth Further Maths students, exposing them to cutting-edge ideas and real-world applications of mathematics.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in various mathematics competitions, including the Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Maths Challenges, with top performers advancing to follow-on rounds. The prestigious Hans Woyda Team Competition offers a chance to compete against other schools in London, sharpening their problem-solving skills in a competitive setting. Additionally, our annual Whitgift Maths Day celebrates mathematics through problem-solving activities, games, and treasure hunts, while the Lower First Maths Afternoon allows our Lower Sixth Further Mathematicians to teach innovative topics to younger students.

From June 2026, we will introduce a residential trip for the top students from the Third, Fourth, and Lower Sixth Forms, where they will explore unfamiliar mathematics in a campus-style environment and collaborate across age groups. We also offer a Maths for Engineering society, where students can delve into mathematics relevant to engineering courses at university, and we train students to participate in the National Cipher Challenge. With dedicated mathematics sections in both the Junior and Senior libraries, Whitgift provides a wealth of resources and opportunities to ensure that every student can excel and develop their passion for mathematics.
