Politics

AIMS

The Politics department at Whitgift seeks to ignite students' interest in contemporary political issues and systems, encouraging them to engage critically with the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to challenge students to think independently, form well-reasoned arguments, and gain a comprehensive understanding of political theory and practice. We place a strong emphasis on verbal debate and written communication, ensuring students are equipped with the skills to articulate their ideas persuasively. Beyond academic achievement, we aim to prepare students for university-level political studies and future careers in politics, law, journalism, and other related fields.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

To foster students’ engagement with real-world politics, the department offers numerous enrichment opportunities. The Debating Society, open to all year groups, is an integral part of our programme, encouraging vibrant discussions on current political topics. Students may also participate in a mock general election and hustings, mirroring national political processes.

For senior students, the Sixth Form trip to New York and Washington DC is a major highlight, offering an immersive experience in the political heart of the United States. This biennial trip provides students with firsthand insight into the workings of American politics. These activities, combined with classroom learning, help students develop a nuanced understanding of both national and global politics.
