Psychology
Aims
Psychology is an intriguing subject that delves into the complexities of human behaviour, offering students the tools to understand themselves, others, and the world around them. Through the study of psychology, students learn to unpick, analyse, and evaluate various aspects of human interaction, even developing innovative theories and concepts to explain why people behave the way they do. As a social science, psychology is grounded in theory and research, promoting the use of the scientific method to explore and answer key questions. At Whitgift, psychology is offered to Sixth Form students as an A Level. However, the subject's influence is felt throughout the school, with younger students in the Junior and Middle Years engaging in activities and workshops designed to spark interest and build foundational knowledge in psychology.
Enrichment Opportunities
Whitgift’s psychology programme offers students numerous enrichment opportunities that make the study of human behaviour both exciting and relevant. The curriculum includes contemporary and fascinating topics such as the impact of social media on relationships, allowing students to explore the intersection of technology and human interaction. Additionally, students can delve into the field of Forensic Psychology under the guidance of Miss Prendergast, who brings real-world experience from her work in prisons and youth offending teams, providing unique insights and practical examples.
Students passionate about making a difference can join the Whitgift Behavioural Insights Team, an innovative club led by the Psychology department. This team collaborates with the School Council and Captain Team to address key issues within the school community using evidence-based strategies derived from cutting-edge psychological research. Additionally, students have the opportunity to plan and conduct their own mini psychological research studies, gaining hands-on experience with essential research skills that will prepare them for undergraduate study. These projects, which have included testing short-term memory, evaluating the accuracy of eyewitness testimony, and examining the effects of social media on self-esteem, provide valuable insights into the scientific process and foster a deeper understanding of human behaviour.
