Spanish

AIMS

The Spanish department at Whitgift is committed to cultivating a profound appreciation for the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures among our students. Our goal is to inspire a genuine enthusiasm for languages and equip students with the skills needed to engage effectively in our interconnected world. Through a rigorous and immersive curriculum, we aim to enhance students' cognitive abilities and deepen their understanding of English, all while developing their fluency in Spanish. We take great pride in supporting students who continue their language studies into the Sixth Form, with around 50% of pupils opting to study a language at this advanced level and many pursuing higher education in languages.

ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

To complement our robust academic program, the Spanish department offers a variety of enriching experiences that bring the language and culture to life. One of the standout opportunities is our annual trip to Madrid during the October half term of the Lower Sixth. This immersive experience allows students to engage with the language and culture firsthand, enhancing their practical skills and cultural understanding.

Our enthusiastic Debating Society provides another valuable enrichment avenue, where students participate in debates with other schools, honing their language skills and critical thinking in a competitive setting. Additionally, we organide theatre trips to see plays that are relevant to our exam syllabuses and beyond, offering students a deeper appreciation of Spanish-language literature and performance. These activities not only enrich students' learning experiences but also prepare them to use their language skills in diverse and practical contexts.
