I’m usually not a fan of rugby but something about this World Cup has invigorated a childlike fixation within and a keen anticipation before each game. The main reason for my enjoyment has been the hosts, Japan. Through fearless rugby and a communal resilience, they have captured hearts all over the world. Japan came into the tournament as underdogs and now at the threshold of glory, this status has risen further, as they prepare to take on the mighty Springboks in Tokyo. There are many lessons that we can take from the Cherry Blossoms' tremendous success, all of which were on display in one of the greatest ever World Cup games against Scotland. The game was the perfect climax to the group stage, but was played in the midst of tragedy. Typhoon Hagibis had struck the night before leaving many dead; Japan valiantly fought restoring pride and hope to a grieving nation. As their coach eloquently put it “We are celebrating but many are not.” It is this quotation that should be imprinted on all our hearts. If more people could think like this, show sympathy and provide hope, then the world would be a better place. It is this infectious mantra of positivity that we all should strive to achieve. The game was a crescendo within Japan’s Hollywood journey and I like many don’t want to see it end any time soon.
