A Bold Reimagining of Shakespeare’s Richard III

A Bold Reimagining of Shakespeare’s Richard III

Whitgift continued its tradition of delivering striking theatre with its latest production, Richard III: Live in Las Vegas. Following the success of previous performances such as Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical, this bold reimagining added an inventive new dimension to the School’s drama repertoire.

Directors, Mr Hodges (Teacher of English) and Mrs Weddle (Interim Head of Drama), explored a range of possible settings for Shakespeare’s original text before landing on the glitz and pizzazz of Las Vegas. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Emcee in the musical Cabaret, famously portrayed by Liza Minnelli, Richard was reimagined as a twisted ringmaster. The role was played by Marcos (Lower Sixth Form), who commanded the stage with charisma, portraying the villain through heightened performance and theatrical showmanship.

With striking technical elements and a strong sense of ensemble throughout, the company delivered three outstanding performances with confidence and flair. Congratulations go to all pupils both onstage and behind the scenes, each of whom played a vital role in bringing this ambitious and imaginative vision to life.
