Third Former, Austin delivered an outstanding performance at the Public Schools Fencing Championships, winning both the Mount Hayes (U14) Épée and Sabre titles at Lee Valley Athletic Centre. The prestigious competition, held from 18-20 March, brought together over 100 schools across three age groups in Foil, Épée, and Sabre.
In the U14 Boys’ Épée, Austin battled through a field of 109 fencers. After two rounds of poules, he was seeded 26th before fighting through four rounds of elimination matches to reach the Semi Final, where he overcame fellow Whitgift student Ethan 10-5. Despite suffering a calf cramp in the final, Austin showed remarkable composure to secure a 10-8 victory.
A day later, he returned for the U14 Boys’ Sabre, where his strong poule performances earned him the 2nd seed. After dominating his early elimination bouts, he found himself trailing 5-9 in the final. In a thrilling comeback, he saved four championship points to win 10-9 against his Manchester Grammar School opponent.
Reflecting on Austin’s success, Mr Williams (Head of Fencing) said “To win the Public Schools Championships at one weapon is brilliant, but to win in two different weapons is an exceptional achievement.”
Whitgift also secured the top boys’ school title for the fourth consecutive year, setting a new school record. Congratulations to all the students who contributed to this incredible achievement!
