In October 2021, for this year’s Whitgift’s House Drama competition, Director of Drama Mr James Hammond, set each House the challenge of presenting two short pieces: the first a duologue between two characters performed by members of the Sixth Form and a group performance by students in the younger years.
House Drama is the only event in Whitgift’s Performing Arts calendar which is entirely directed and organised by the pupils themselves, providing opportunities for students across the School to collaborate and share valuable learning experiences and support one another.
On the night, 4th place went to Smith’s House and Andrew’s took 3rd. Guest of Honour and Judge, Mr Zois Pigadas (Theatre Director, and course leader at East 15 Acting School) had a tough job to separate between 1st and 2nd place. However, strong, grounded and honest performances earned Dodd’s 2nd place.
The winners of the night - and House Drama champions 2021 - were Brodie’s. They were praised by Mr Pigadas for their superb duologue with great physicality and strong emotional connection, performed by Nifemi and Ethan, and for the high level of work by the ensemble’s cast for Alice in Wonderland.
“I’ve been delighted to see students working so hard to plan, direct and rehearse their performances,” said Mr Hammond. “The evening was a fantastic array of theatrical genres, styles and stories and a reflection of the effort and ability they applied to the challenge. It was wonderful to see our young performers so well supported by their peers, staff and families who came along and filled the PAC”.
