Mr Ahn and Mrs Jeong from the education section of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea brought eight teachers from South Korea on a study trip to Whitgift. The group was excited to observe Korean lessons (taught by Mrs Mund and Mrs Morrell) during their day with us. Korean was introduced to the Lower First Form curriculum six years ago, complementing the stimulating Languages Awareness programme.
Asked why Whitgift introduced Korean, Mr Hunt (Head of Languages) said: “At Whitgift we want our pupils to try things that they never thought they would, and go on to achieve beyond their wildest imaginings; Korean offers satisfyingly challenging grammar and a unique writing system all within the context of a fascinating history and a rich and “cool” cultural context! Pupils enjoy dipping their toe into the water of a contrasting culture and derive a real sense of achievement from gaining such a rare skill. Combined with our Languages Awareness course, it enables pupils to build strong foundations for the future study of all languages.”
