On Thursday 20 June 2024, Whitgift’s annual Science in Action Day returned for the Second Form featuring a mix of lectures and activities in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
Commencing the day, a captivating lecture on Marine Biology unfolded as Kaushiik Subramaniam (conservation biologist and Old Whitgiftian) shared stories from his fieldwork in the South African scrubland and the coral reefs of the Maldives.
Students also embarked on a cosmic journey inside a portable planetarium with WonderDome, exploring the wonders of the universe. They later joined The Detective Project to learn about modern crime investigation techniques. This was followed by a session with Mrs Badhan (Lead in Animal Care) during which students had an up-close encounter with the School's animals and learned about their evolutionary traits.
The day concluded with Jon Hare (Freelance Science Communicator) leading a hands-on ‘Bucky Balls – Carbon 60’ session. Students built the C60 molecule using straws and ‘atoms’. Jon shared his experience working as a PhD student under Sir Harry Kroto on the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of Buckminsterfullerene (C60).
Overall, the day was filled with engaging and educational experiences, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for science among the students.
