Sessions begin for the National Theatre Playwriting Programme

This week eight Whitgift students in Fifth Form to Upper Sixth Form started taking part in the National Theatre NewViews playwrighting programme. As well as online sessions once a week, the students will have meetings, via Microsoft Teams, with a professional playwright. The first is scheduled for December with a follow up meeting in 2021 where the professional writer will go through their draft script with them. "This course helps expand a student's understanding of how scripts work", explained Director of Drama Mr Hammond. "This is extremely useful for English and Drama, but it will also encourage them to look at the world and write about it, so their interest could take them anywhere." The students will then be able to submit their 30-minute script to the NT competition, the winner of which gets a fully realised production at the National Theatre.
