In December, 28 of Whitgift’s talented Violin, Viola, and Cello players took to the Concert Hall stage for the String Competition. This event offered talented string players an opportunity to perform in a supportive environment, and to receive personalised feedback from experienced adjudicators. This is the second Music Department competition of the term, following on from the success of the Woodwind Competition in September 2021.
We welcomed Teacher of Music and Drama, Mrs Fieller, to adjudicate our Junior Class. For our Intermediate and Senior Classes, we invited guest adjudicator Nathaniel Boyd. As an internationally recognised chamber musician and soloist, Nathaniel appears regularly at the world’s leading concert halls. Described as ‘exceptionally gifted’ by Musical Opinion magazine, he is a laureate of numerous prizes for his work with the Navarra Quartet, and his recordings of Vasks and Haydn quartets both received 5-star reviews from BBC Music Magazine.
Director of Orchestral Music, Mr Winter, commented, “This was a wonderful event in which all students who participated demonstrated technical and musical abilities of the highest standard. The adjudication given by Mrs Fieller and Mr Boyd were incisive, helpful, and positive – giving the competitors who took part invaluable help and support towards their musical progress. I am also grateful to Graduate Music Assistant, Mr Morrell, for his excellent administration and work in helping make this such a successful and enjoyable competition.”
The winners of each competition class were as follows: Second Former Louis Peckham (Junior Class), First Former Sam Bristow (Intermediate Class), and Fifth Former Lucian Ng (Senior Class). Sam was also awarded the Timothy Posner Music Cup for a String Player with Outstanding Potential.
Congratulations are due, not just to our winners, but also to all participants. Without exception, they did themselves credit, and represented the very best of Whitgift’s musical talent.
Thanks must go to our adjudicators, Mrs Fieller and Mr Boyd; our accompanists, Mr Winter and Mr Lane; and the AV team, who organised the live streaming of the competition.
