From Monday 29 July to Friday 9 August 2024, Whitgift welcomed over 220 Year 5 pupils from local primary schools for the annual Community Summer School. The programme provided students with a week of academic and co-curricular activities focused on culture, language, and kindness.
This year's highlights included Japanese lessons where students explored both the language and the art of origami, and British Sign Language which introduced them to non-verbal communication. Other popular activities were Fencing, Art inspired by Kandinsky’s synesthetic work, and Science experiments where students examined their own skin cells under microscopes.
Parents commented on how excited their children were, with one parent saying “My daughter really loved it and was excited to go back every day for the whole week. She has enjoyed the amazing variety of activities. It was a truly enjoyable experience. Thank you so much!”
Miss Mason (Head of Junior English and Course Director for the WCSS) explained "Every year I marvel at the ability of children to get along with one another, take risks and be resilient in the face of new experiences and this year was no different.”
The programme's success was made possible by the dedication of teachers from Whitgift, Old Palace, and Trinity, along with support from Sixth Form volunteers.
We look forward to opening Whitgift’s doors to new pupils next year!
