Record A* rate for Whitgift School’s 2025 A Level cohort

Andrew Quadrangle

Congratulations to all our Upper Sixth students who received their A Level results this morning. More than one in four of all A Level grades were at the very highest grade of A*. Just under 60% of all grades were at A*/A.

Across all A Level schools in the UK last summer, only 9% of all final grades were at A* compared with Whitgift’s 2025 tally of over 26% before any possible re-marks.

25 boys gained three or more A* grades, and 69 gained three or more grades at A* or A.

In July, we also received excellent International Baccalaureate results, where 93% of the IB cohort achieved their first or second university choice, and the cohort as a whole achieved an average of 39 points – against an international average of around 30. In the IB, 82% of all Higher Levels were at 7 and 6 (A*/A at A Level) and 98% of HL grades were at Level 5 or above.

Once the IB results and A Level results are combined to reflect the success of the whole cohort of 186 boys, this year’s Upper Sixth Form achieved 28% of all grades at A* or its IB Higher Level equivalent, 62% at A*/A, and 90% of all grades at A*-B or IB equivalent.

This year, no boys at Whitgift took the BTEC so all our pupils are represented in the figures above.

We are very proud of the achievements of all of our boys, so many of whom played a full-hearted and generous part in the broader life of the school community, whether through leadership, sport, drama, the CCF, music, or an apparently infinite range of other opportunities within the School.

This last quality led to Whitgift School being awarded a significant strength for its extra-curricular provision in its outstanding ISI inspection report in May 2025.

A note from the Headmaster to all A Level students

Congratulations to every one of our A Level students. I have loved getting to know such a tremendous group of boys this year. I am more proud of you than I can say.

I am now going to repeat here the words I wrote for the IB cohort when they got their results last month. Feel proud of all you have achieved at Whitgift, stay in touch with any of us if you think we can help, and remember that there will always be infinitely more to you than your exam results! Remember, however wonderful or otherwise your scores are, we are here for you and will offer advice and support.
