Whitgift School, South Croydon, surges ahead of top grammar schools to place in the top 50 of all UK schools based on last summer’s A level, IB and GCSE results.
Whitgift was placed the 7th best independent boys’ school in the whole of the UK, and the 3rd best London school with a boarding provision for boys.
In the Sunday Times Parent Power schools’ league tables published at the weekend, Whitgift proved itself once again one of the top academic schools in the country.
In a list featuring 730 UK schools of every type, Whitgift leapt ahead of Tiffin School, one of the UK’s leading grammar schools, to be placed 48th best school of any type across the UK. Its performance in A level, IB and GCSE made Whitgift the 7th best boys’ independent school in the whole of the UK.
As well as finishing 27 places above top local grammar, Tiffin School, Whitgift finished comfortably ahead of most other London boys’ or co-ed independent schools including Trinity in Croydon, Emanuel, Eltham College, Merchant Taylors’, Caterham, RGS Guildford, Dulwich College and Epsom College.
Whitgift, famous for its massive extra-curricular programme, was also London’s third-best boys’ school offering boarding.
Whitgift School is one of the UK’s leading academic schools but its sporting programme is legendary: only this week it won the national indoor hockey championships at both U18 and U16 levels. It currently has two teams continuing in national rugby cups, and boys participate at national and international level in a range of sports from cricket, hockey and football to swimming, modern pentathlon and fencing. Its drama and music are also central to Whitgift life. Former pupils include Kit Connor, starring in the Netflix series, Heartstopper, royal coronation composer, Tarik O’Regan, young England cricketer, Jamie Smith, gold medal Olympian, Joe Choong, Germany and Bayern Munich star, Jamal Musiala, rugby international, Elliot Daly, and premier league winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Headmaster Andrew Halls said, “Whitgift’s success in the summer exams comes from an attitude to learning that means boys do very well in exams, but they don’t lose sight of the balance they need in their lives. Sport, music, drama, and a thousand other fantastic opportunities, provide balance, teamwork – and fun. Those are more important than ever for children in the 21st century.”
