On Wednesday 29 September, Whitgift held the first music event of the new academic year – the annual Woodwind Competition. Showcasing the wide range of woodwind talent that Whitgift has to offer, there were a variety of performances on the bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe, and saxophone from a total of 17 students.
Mr Elsom, Director of Music, adjudicated the Junior Class, and the Music Department were privileged to welcome Rachel Ingleton, an accomplished oboist and teacher, to adjudicate the Intermediate and Senior Classes. Rachel has adjudicated prizes and undergraduate recitals at the Royal Academy of Music (Junior and Senior Departments) and at Junior King’s School. She has also been an Examiner for the ABRSM since 2016.
Mr Elsom commented, “Many of our most experienced wind players chose to enter this year, and Rachel Ingleton, our guest adjudicator, was most impressed by the overall musicality and technical ability of those who performed. It was an incredibly difficult decision that she had to make, as all the students performed so well.” He also added that her advice regarding breath control was incredibly helpful, and all the students who performed received personalised feedback.
The School is grateful to Director of Orchestral Music, Mr Winter, and Head of Keyboard, Mr Lane, for accompanying the participants, as well as the AV Team for their help in making the event (including the live streaming) possible.
