Hockey

Pupils at Whitgift have the opportunity to represent the School whatever their level and are supported in working towards achieving their aspirations.

All pupils can play and excel in Hockey through an enjoyable programme that aims to instil a passion for the sport. Our approach ensures that pupils progress to achieve their full potential and ultimately, the score then takes care of itself.

Whitgift has 24 Hockey teams across the School ranging from A to D and students develop their skills by competing in a fixture card combining school matches, cup competitions and Indoor Hockey.

The programme is devised and delivered by a team of seven dedicated staff who have an enviable coaching CV and pedigree. Pupils who want to develop their Hockey further can enjoy four to six hours a week coaching time each week.

Whitgift’s links to National League clubs, such as East Grinstead, Wimbledon and Oxted, allow many pupils to advance their skills to the highest levels. Notable Hockey OWs include Rhys Smith, Luke Taylor, Jack Waller and Zach Wallace, who are all currently playing for Great Britain. There are currently nine players in the England U16 and U18 teams and three in the England U21s. Whitgift have been National Outdoor Champions 15 times and National Indoor Champions 11 times in the last ten years across the age groups.

Hockey at Whitgift measures true success of the programme by how many pupils play Hockey long after they have left the School.
