Modern Pentathlon

Modern Pentathlon comprises five sports  and caters for athletes of every ability. Students of all ages are encouraged to try this amazing sport. The Modern Pentathlon and Cross Country programme is led by ex-international Pentathlete, Sam Sanderson who has previously worked with athletes across the UK in various roles from grass roots through to Olympic Medalists.

Students develop through a range of competitive opportunities from friendly to national level competitions in Biathlon, Laser Run, Triathlon, Tetrathlon, Pentathlon and Cross Country.  Professional and contact support helps students to progress to the next level.

The School has close links with local clubs in the area as well as links to Pentathlon GB, British Fencing and a number of other National Governing bodies.

Whitgift is one of the largest Pentathlon GB Academies in the country. This allows athletes who train and compete in all aspects of Modern Pentathlon the opportunity to come and train at Whitgift on several occasions throughout the week.

The School has had a number of notable achievements from the Modern Pentathlon programme past and present. However, we are most proud of the fact that many Whitgiftians who achieve national recognition have never accessed the sport before attending Whitgift. A true demonstration of the inclusive and transformational nature of this Sport.

Notable Achievements

  • Senior GB Modern Pentathlon representatives, Sam Curry and Joseph Choong who are currently at the National training centre at the University of Bath.
  • Joseph Choong represented Team GB at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, finishing in 1st place.
  • During the past year we have also achieved over 70 national medals, which added to the academy achievements takes the tally to more than 80 national medals.
