If you are based in the US, you can make a tax-efficient gift to Whitgift via the British Schools & Universities Foundation. When making a donation via BSUF, please express your recommendation that BSUF allocates your donation to Whitgift School. Please also email the Development Office to inform us, as otherwise we will not be notified before the end of the quarter. Your gift will be tax-efficient for you, and will not incur any transaction costs.

Whitgift owes its foundation to the foresight of its founder, John Whitgift, over 400 years ago. The foresight shown by legacy donors has been transformative for the School and without a legacy the School could not have come into being in the first place. We know that family and close friends come first when you make your will. When they have been provided for, we ask you to remember Whitgift and help continue the legacy our school was founded on.

You can get income tax relief if you give, or sell at less than market value, any qualifying investments to a UK charity such as Whitgift. Individuals can deduct the value of the qualifying investments and any transaction costs, at the date of disposal, when calculating their total income for income tax purposes. This is in addition to Capital Gains Tax relief for gifts of assets to charity. Companies can get Corporation Tax relief for gifts to charity for the same types of investment. This is in addition to relief from Corporation Tax on capital gains on such gifts.

The following categories of investment qualify for the relief:

• shares and securities listed or dealt in on the UK Stock Exchange, including the Alternative Investment Market
• shares and securities listed or dealt in on recognised foreign stock exchanges
• units in an authorised unit trust (AUT)
• shares in a UK open-ended investment company (OEIC)
• holdings in certain foreign collective investment schemes - broadly, schemes established outside the UK equivalent to unit trusts and OEICs
• the whole of a beneficial interest in a qualifying interest in land and buildings

The 1596 Society recognises donors who make a gift of £1,596 or more in a financial year or give £15.96 monthly if they are under 30.

1596 Society members are invited to an annual special event to hear about the impact of their gift and will be thanked in the List of Donors each year (unless you wish to remain anonymous).
