First, we will discuss the origins of jazz and the musical elements which work together to create this exciting genre of music. We will then study the theory and techniques required to interpret a jazz standard. This will include chords, rhythmic and harmonic concepts and how to interpret a lead sheet. These principles will be demonstrated at the piano, but are applicable to any instrument. This session is suitable for all students musically inclined, with any level of experience. Prior study of music theory will be helpful, but not necessary.
