Meet the team! Director of Studies: Mr Mario M. Bellu

My name is Mario, born and raised in Great Britain. Most of my life has been spent within multi-cultural settings, hence choosing the world of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages seemed like a fitting choice, and has proven to be so over the last twelve years. I am excited in being the Director of Studies at Whitgift International  Summer School and I am confident that the broad life experiences I’ve had will only help enhance the already existing curriculum.

As Director of Studies, Mr Bellu will be leading a team of experienced English teachers at Whitgift Summer School, who all aim to build students' confidence through groupwork and lots of support!

Holding distinctive leadership qualities such as diligence and foresight with strong organisational and communication skills has led me naturally into the directing domain. I enjoy working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and is something that comes naturally from the skills learned from the varied life experiences I have gained. These skills have been harnessed from being involved within differing environments across the world ranging from China, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Russia and across mainland Europe to name but some. I take great pride in having cultivated these varied cultural understandings which have massively aided my ability to positively manage diverse groups of individuals.

At Whitgift Summer School, students have the chance to improve their English and have fun, especially during project work in the afternoons.

Perhaps more importantly, this life full of rich experiences has enabled me to keep a fresh child-like enthusiasm for life. Yes! And I do like to have fun while I learn. I take pride that as a teacher I can pretty much bring even the dullest of materials alive into a fun and bright manner, whilst maintaining the essential language point/skill of any given lesson aim. I do believe this is an important skill to have as it aids greater  learner motivation for all involved, which is especially true during any summer learning programme. One’s artistic self may be unleashed to engage in wide ranging activities which support the development of individuals on multiple levels. This is why the best summer programmes offer lots of opportunities for students to get involved and contribute at a creative, fun, personal level. Multiple platforms can offer one the chance to tune skills, whether it’s taking centre stage in a drama production or offering your critical analysis during a debate – ample opportunities exist to aid in one's self discovery and development. That’s the summer school I wish to promote, and I do indeed look forward to sharing in the 2022 experience.
