Meet the team! House Parent: Ms Miranda White!

This year I’ll be returning to Whitgift for my third year as a house parent and I’m really looking forward to coming back.

I spend most of the school year as an English language teacher, but love joining the welfare team in the boarding house for a different summer experience. It’s great getting to know students outside the classroom and I’ll be around for anything they need, whether it’s a toothbrush or a listening ear. I can’t wait to hear their stories and learn more about where they’re from.

I’ve been a teacher in various contexts over the past twelve years, in the UK and across the world. Even as a child, I helped in the classrooms of younger students; it’s just in my nature to have time and patience for learners in all environments. Originally from the north of England I’ve taught history in Yorkshire and also English in Peru, China and Spain, where I am currently based. I have a lot of experience communicating with international students who are learning English, so we’ll have no problems dealing with any issues that may come up in the boarding house.

Aside from history and language, my biggest passions are the outdoors and travel. Before the pandemic, I was working in outdoor education and it’s a wonderful thing to share what you love with others. I am looking forward to sharing stories with international students who will be coming to our English language summer school this year. The summer school experience is so valuable: it’s a chance to visit new places and make friends from all over the world while learning and having fun. I’m pleased to be able to help facilitate that, to support students in their new adventure and to make it the best summer it can be.

My goal is to make sure everyone is comfortable and happy, making friends and enjoying new experiences. I look forward to seeing enthusiastic faces after activities and excursions, the students’ growing confidence, and their pride when sharing what they’ve worked on at the end of each week. This summer’s going to be great!
