Meet the Team! James Hodge, Pre-IGCSE English Teacher

As the summer term begins and the Year 11s and 13s leave us for exam season, there are many goodbyes being said at Whitgift this week. As an English teacher who has worked at Whitgift for 18 months, it's a bittersweet feeling seeing students sail off into the sunset and into their futures.

However, for those of us working at the International Summer School, there is a sense of excitement. As one chapter ends, another begins.

Having previously worked at the Summer School last year as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language, I already anticipate the many joys of the voyage ahead: of meeting new faces; of enjoying inspiring learning environments together; of building a burgeoning community.

Of course, there is a huge amount of work to be done in preparation, but collaborating with our brilliant summer school team is always a pleasure and the payoff for our wonderful young people makes the efforts well worth it!

Most exciting for me will be the launch of the new Pre-IGCSE English course that I am relishing designing. There is nothing that satisfies an educator more than inspiring bright and brilliant young people and it is a pleasure to be writing the first chapter on the Pre-IGCSE journey.

The Whitgift Pre-IGCSE English course is going to be a joy for both teacher and students alike. I am so excited to be assembling a bespoke range of texts - both fiction and non-fiction alike - that will firstly be enjoyed as examples of great storytelling or rhetoric, and for students to use these as diving boards to inspire their own writing projects throughout the week.

I can't wait to welcome you and your young people to Whitgift very soon and to share my love of English with you all. Bring on the summer!
