Meet your English language teacher! Mr Rory Duncan

Hello! I’m Rory Duncan and I am really looking forward to teaching at Whitgift Summer School for a second year teaching English as a foreign language to the teenage students aged 14-16 and the younger English language learners who are 11-13. I can't wait!

My passion for teaching the English language
I’ve always enjoyed teaching English and the English language more generally. When not working in summer school, I teach English online to students of all ages from around the world, train other English teachers, and co-host a podcast called Success with IELTS which is based on the IELTS exam students take to enter many English-speaking universities.

Making sure English language students learn in a comfortable environment
At Whitgift Summer School, my job is to make sure students work to the best of their abilities and feel at ease while away from home by creating an environment where we value learning and difference in experience. I also draw on my considerable experience and unique abilities to deliver this.

Teaching students from all over the world
I have worked as a teacher in many different contexts including Ghana, Russia, East Timor, England and Scotland, where I also work as a primary school teacher in addition to my other jobs. Online, I have also taught students from Poland, Vietnam, Germany, Peru, Australia, Iran, India and Indonesia, among others. I love organising lessons and putting together materials to help students improve, based on their strengths and areas of development. In addition to teaching languages, I also understand the experience of learning them based on how I learned Russian and French, and use this to inform my approach to teaching.

Teaching in the best summer school ever
I’m really excited to meet all of the students this year as we return for the first time since 2019 and get to work on enjoying a summer of learning together. Of all the places I have worked, Whitgift is the best and I can’t wait to see others making this discovery for themselves.
