Meet your English Language Teacher! Ms Rose Lewis

I’ve taught English as a foreign language since 2014, and have worked in the UK, Italy, Poland and Hungary. Now, I teach in a primary school in Leicester which means I get to teach a little bit of everything!

I’ve taught at Whitgift Summer School since 2017 and it’s definitely one of the highlights of my year. While the online summer school in 2021 was an interesting experience, I’m looking forward to returning to Whitgift in real life this year, meeting all the English language students and hopefully seeing some returning students too!

So, why do I think Whitgift Summer School is such a great English summer school for international students? Not only are the facilities and activities fantastic, but I feel that all the staff care about their students and always go above and beyond to help them reach their full potential. In terms of your English language learning, being immersed in an English-speaking environment, esepecially with English speaking teenagers, is going to really help your confidence and fluency. Every year, I see all my students making huge progress, regardless of their English language level.

My top tip for improving your English before you begin your British summer school experience is to read. Read anything and everything!  Reading helps you develop your vocabulary and grammatical knowledge. It’s often said you have to see or hear a word multiple times before you’re able to use it naturally when speaking and writing. Reading is a good way to see those words. And what about grammar? While you might know the rules for different grammatical features, reading will help you see these features used in context. The more you see it, the easier it’ll be to use it.

See you in the summer!
