Welcome back Mr Legg! David joins the 2025 Summer School as a Senior English as a Foreign Language Teacher

My name is Mr Legg and I was born in the great city of Newcastle Upon Tyne in Great Britain. If you haven’t heard of it, please look up the football team. They are definitely the best in the world.

Whilst I was born in Great Britain, I lived in many different countries when I was growing up. My Parents’ jobs took us to the USA, Germany and Singapore, introducing me to different people, foods and cultures. This type of travel felt so normal to me that I have continued to do it in my adult life. During my twenties, I used holidays to journey around the world, continuing the exploration that began in my childhood. I went on adventures in many different places like Egypt, Morocco, Russia, Mongolia, China, Italy and many other countries on our planet. Each of these destinations brought new memories and experiences that has brought so much happiness to my life.

When I became a teacher eleven years ago, I decided to travel even more. I moved to Poland and created my own English Language School. This incredible opportunity introduced me to so many wonderful students from Poland and the surrounding regions. What I found most rewarding, was following the development of students over years and helping them achieve their goals. For some, they wanted basic English to enjoy future holidays. Other students wanted to achieve high levels of English so they could study at a University in Great Britain. Either way, I felt really lucky that I could help them learn and do their best. Sadly, my school closed during the COVID pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped my enthusiasm for teaching and inspiring students.

Summer Schools are a big part of the English Language Learning industry. I have worked in a few and was looking for a new school when the COVID pandemic finished. I was introduced to Whitgift Summer School by a friend and worked as a Teacher in the summer of 2024. I was thrilled to be invited to a school that puts so much emphasis on the students themselves. Interactive English lessons and introductions to British Culture that are designed to pull the language and lessons out of books. Instead lessons are encouraged to incorporate modern topics through modern teaching techniques whilst still remaining true to the teaching theories we all adhere too.

Whitgift also introduces the Progressive Skills in Action project work which is something I had not seen before. This weekly group task inspires students to practise their language skills in real life situations whether the topic is business or creative. These presentations really help the students demonstrate different English Skills in different ways.

This student centred curriculum at Whitgift Summer School really puts the goals of the students first. I look forward to being a part of it again in 2025.
