What to expect on our IB Revision Course

Hello and welcome to our IB Easter Revision Course!

I’m Miss Mitchell, Director of International Baccalaureate at Whitgift. Throughout my seven years here I’ve taken on quite a few roles, from Deputy Head of Physics (my main teaching subject) and Boarding Tutor to Sixth Form Assistant and Head of Higher Education. I’ve also come to teach Theory of Knowledge and I supervise Extended Essays, alongside presenting at academic enrichment events and supporting university applicants – so I now know Whitgift inside out!

Why Whitgift? Revise at a Top IB World School
Our average points score is 41.6 out of a maximum 45 and almost all of our subject grades are at 6 or 7. Despite the pandemic-induced uncertainty, 75% of our leavers in 2020 achieved 40 or more points (with 50% on 42+) and as of 2021, we are ranked 10th in the world in terms of IB results in the world, with an average points score of 41.6/45. These results are no accident. They are down to the expertise of our teachers who combine immaculate conceptual knowledge with understanding of the assessment criteria when supporting our students in developing new skills. Our recent IB alumni say it best:

Luke “The quality of the teaching at Whitgift is unparalleled; the rigour of academic study in lessons coupled with the depth of exploration in super-curricular clubs lay the foundations for a rich and engaging education.”

Isaac “The IB programme has given me the opportunity to thrive as a person and hone my interests in several subjects.”

Max “Whitgift’s holistic approach to education is its greatest asset. There has never been a moment, across all aspects of School life, that I have not felt completely supported. The teachers and coaches are enthusiastic, motivating, caring and reliable.”

Subjects you can take on our revision course
The subjects we have chosen to offer on our IB Revision course include Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches and Applications & Interpretation) and all three of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, because we know that these subjects often feature in university entry requirements. We are also offering Economics, one of the most popular Group 3 subjects, in which a structured revision programme is essential.

A unique place to study
This IB Easter Revision Course is situated at Haling Park, our stunning school site, meaning you’ll be able to give your full focus to your studies for concentrated periods of time. Any sense of feeling overwhelmed by workload and the expanse of the IB Diploma will be left at the door as our carefully planned and personalised revision begins. Having taught at four schools previously, I can honestly say that Whitgift is unique. In my very first term here I celebrated my birthday by exploring the school maze and attending a talk about Parseltongue (for those who are not Harry Potter fans, this is the language of serpents!). I’ve been able to take students to London lectures by Roger Penrose and Brian Greene and to endurance running events in the same week – while also discussing what my students are reading and sitting in on their calculus lessons. I myself am studying for a Doctorate in Education in my spare time so I never cease to be inspired by the students’ research on Individuals and Societies.

Our Headmaster once told us that Whitgift seeks and embraces the “genius” in all members of the school community, and I can only imagine that all our students, teachers and visitors find a personal Whitgift whirlwind in which to be swept up. So, there can surely be no better place to take an intensive IB Revision Course.

I hope to meet you at Whitgift in April, and I wish you the best of luck with your Diploma Programme.

Study tip!

Miss Mitchell's  top study tip for this term is to do what you’re told when you’re told. You’ll be starting university applications and concluding the Extended Essay, reflecting on CAS and writing for TOK – all while continuing to attend lessons for six subjects with the classwork, homework, tests and coursework that these provide. There is an end in sight; this is the final year of your IB Diploma. So, do what you can to think like a duck, paddling furiously under the surface while maintaining good standards of work and punctuality. And don’t forget – any revision notes made now will be a big advantage next term
