Week 2 Whitgift Summer School 2023: Embracing Fun and Learning

Whitgift Summer School: Embracing Fun and Learning - Week 2

Welcome back to our blog, where we continue our journey through the student experiences at Whitgift Summer School. The second week was nothing short of adventure, laughter, and new discoveries, particularly the wet British Summer! Let's dive right into the highlights of this action-packed week!

Retail Therapy at Bluewater Shopping Centre

The week commenced with a well-deserved break from studies as the students embarked on a shopping trip to the famous Bluewater Shopping Centre. With a vast array of stores and entertainment options, the students had the chance to unwind, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy a relaxing day together. They also enjoyed a BBQ back at the school upon their return. It was a perfect way to recharge the batteries before a busy week ahead.

Afternoon Adventures - A Diverse Array of Activities

As the week progressed, the students indulged in an eclectic mix of afternoon activities, catering to various interests and hobbies. From trying their hand at cricket to getting creative with arts and crafts, from showcasing their table tennis skills to learning essential survival techniques, and from spiking volleyball to trying out new dance moves, there was something for everyone to explore and enjoy. Mr Jordan Lee McDonald, who led the Cricket activity said that it was easier for the students to learn the rules of Cricket by playing. We completely agree! Anyone who has ever tried to explain the rules of this game to someone who doesn't know the rules will understand Mr Lee McDonald's rationale!

Expert-led Academies for Sports Enthusiasts

For the sports enthusiasts, the second week brought exclusive academies conducted by professional Whitgift coaches. Students had the unique opportunity to enhance their skills in tennis, basketball, golf, and dance, under the guidance of experienced instructors. These academies not only nurtured their sporting abilities but also instilled a sense of discipline and teamwork. The main aim of taking an Academy at Whitgift is for students to improve their skills or learn something new about the Academy they have chosen.

Evening Entertainment - every night from 19:30 - 20:30

Evenings at Whitgift Summer School are always 'busy'! The students engaged in various activities to unwind after a day filled with learning and adventure. From belting out their favorite tunes at Karaoke to showcasing their knowledge at game shows, from artistic cake decorating to bouncing off energy on inflatables, and not forgetting the highlight of the week - the legendary Whitgift summer school disco, where the dance floor witnessed friendships blossoming and memories being created.

A Magical Journey - Harry Potter Walking Tour

Wednesday's half-day excursion took the students on a magical journey to the world of Harry Potter in central London. Exploring the city's famous landmarks and locations featured in the beloved films, such as St Pauls, the students were captivated by the allure of the wizarding world. The tour was an enriching experience that combined entertainment with historical insights.

Celebrating Achievements - Graduation Ceremony

As the week drew to a close, we celebrated not only the end of week 2 but also the end of the first session for 55 students who were departing today. Friday evening witnessed the second graduation ceremony, a heartwarming event where the achievements of the students were recognized, and memories of their time at Whitgift Summer School were cherished. It was a time of joy, mixed with a touch of sadness as we prepared to say goodbye to the first group of students who had completed their 2 week stay with us.

Exploring Canterbury - A Rainy British Adventure

Saturday saw the students venturing to Canterbury to visit the stunning Cathedral and indulge in the traditional British pastime of punting. Despite the rain, the students embraced the true British summer experience with enthusiasm, showing that nothing could dampen their spirits when it came to exploring new places and making the most of their time here in the UK. As you can see from the below images, it was all smiles and umbrellas as they punted along the River Stour in Canterbury!

As we wrap up the second week of Whitgift Summer School, we are sad to say goodbye to the first cohort of students who arrived on July 9. However, we are delighted to welcome the 50 new students who have just arrived today for the beginning of a new week and new adventures. The students who are spending 3, 4 and 6 weeks with us are already making the new students feel welcome as we begin week 3 of Whitgift Summer School 2023!
