Whitgift Summer School Week Two Round Up

Welfare:

Another active week at Founders House! Week two involved chess tournaments and another big tournament, the world cup final! Students cheered for their teams, as well as supporting the teams of their new Whitgift summer school friends! Friday and Saturday night came with teary goodbyes as our two week students said goodbye to their friends. This week we look forward to the talent show and getting to know our new students at the house!

Academic:

Week two at Whitgift Summer School has been a masterclass in high-impact communication, and as Director of Studies, I am incredibly proud of how our students and our 10 exceptional teachers have elevated the academic bar. Our mornings focused on rigorous linguistic development through general English, academic enrichment, and essential academic skills. In the afternoons, our task-based learning projects took a brilliant new direction: our upper school students ran advanced writing workshops to author their own editorial news columns about the Whitgift experience, while our lower school teams transformed into sports marketers to design promotional materials that elevate professional team profiles. Watching our global learners transition from core language acquisition to becoming published journalists and creative designers in just one week has been the ultimate highlight, and we are ready to carry this phenomenal momentum straight into week three!

Activities:

What a week it has been at Whitgift Summer School! From specialist academy coaching and hands-on activities to unforgettable evening events and exciting excursions, our students have once again embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm, determination, and plenty of smiles.

Our Academy sessions provided students with the chance to learn from professional coaches across a range of disciplines, including Tennis, Basketball, Horse Riding, and Design Technology (DT). Whether refining existing skills or trying something completely new, students benefited enormously from expert tuition and demonstrated excellent progress throughout the week. It was wonderful to see so many students challenging themselves and growing in confidence.

Away from the academies, our Multi-Activity programme offered something for everyone. Students enjoyed Volleyball, Futsal, Survival Skills, Vinyl Crafts, and Cookery. Survival Skills proved particularly popular, with students learning how to build shelters, safely create fires, and even roast marshmallows! Meanwhile, our aspiring chefs cooked up a storm in the kitchen under the guidance of the Whitgift Summer School catering team.

Our evening programme was packed with energy and excitement. The week began with the ever-popular Egg Protector Challenge, where teams completed tasks to earn materials to protect their eggs from a series of increasingly destructive tests. Much to the disappointment of the Activity Team, an incredible six out of twelve eggs survived, resulting in the losing staff members receiving the traditional punishment of having eggs cracked over their heads!

Wednesday's Movie Night gave everyone a chance to relax before Thursday's highly anticipated House Challenge Evening, which saw the Sports Hall transformed into a thrilling Laser Tag arena. After an outstanding week of participation, teamwork, and commitment across the programme, House Seacole were crowned champions and lifted the prestigious Krispy Kreme House Cup. We rounded off the week in style with our Friday Disco, where students danced the night away while enjoying a highlights reel of photographs and memories from another unforgettable week.

Our excursions also gave students the opportunity to experience some of London's most iconic landmarks. During our walking tour, students explored Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Chinatown, Carnaby Street, and Piccadilly Circus, soaking up the atmosphere of one of the world's greatest cities.

The week's second excursion took us to the London Stadium, host venue of the 2012 Olympic Games, for the annual London Athletics Meet in front of a sell-out crowd of 60,000 spectators. Students witnessed world-class competition and, incredibly, saw history being made as Josh Kerr broke the world record in the Emsley Carr Mile, providing a truly memorable end to an outstanding week.

A huge thank you to our staff, coaches, and partners for making the week such a success. We look forward to creating even more amazing memories in the weeks ahead.
