Tailored for those students who are planning to study at an international, boarding or bilingual school, our Academic Enrichment course offers a deep dive into the core subjects of Maths, English and Science.

The course

Guided by expert Whitgift teachers, students will build a strong foundation for academic success through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and collaborative projects.

Designed exclusively by Whitgift School, this program also integrates elements of our year-round IGCSE curriculum for international students. This includes Global Citizenship, Ideatum and Ignite, which are all completely unique to Whitgift School.

Students immerse themselves in an exciting three-week course that revolves around English, Maths, and Science. Guided by our expert Whitgift teachers, you'll dive deep into these subjects, building a strong foundation that will set you on a path to academic success. Engaging lessons, interactive activities, and collaborative projects will make your learning experience both enriching and enjoyable.

Applying

After completing our booking form, students must prove they have the required Upper Intermediate (CEFR B2) level of English to take the course. Candidates can do this by sending us a certificate or recent school report if studying in an international/boarding/bilingual school. Should this not be possible, students will need to complete our online tests before a place is offered. All candidates will need to take a writing test about their motivation for attending the course. Should a student not have the required level of English to take this course, we recommend our Intensive General English Course.

Subjects by week (provisional)

Week 1: Sciences

Starting an academic science programme requires a solid foundation in scientific concepts and skills. In the Science Module of the programme, students look at understanding scientific method, including the steps in designing experiments, collecting data and analysing results. They will learn more about the fundamental concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Furthermore, students will learn all about Lab Safety, note-taking, science vocabulary as well as graphs and data interpretation.

Week 2: English Language & Literature

It is important for students to be proactive in improving their language, reading and writing skills. Although students attending this course will require a minimum B2 level of English, there will be a focus on grammar and punctuation as this will be crucial in crafting well-organised and coherent compositions.

To this, students will familiarise themselves with different styles of writing, for example descriptive, narrative, persuasive and informative. They will learn to adapt their writing styles to different purposes and audiences and also understand the structure of different types of texts such as essays, reports and creative writing pieces. Furthermore, students will analyse various types of text including fiction and non-fiction and poetry. Elsewhere, they will analyse different types of literary techniques too.

Week 3: Mathematics & Statistics

Our Maths session is dynamic and will raise students' awareness of the core elements they need to be aware of. Basic concepts will be reviewed, ensuring all students have a solid understanding of arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, percentages and basic algebraic concepts. Mental maths will be worked on to improve skills that will save you time in class and exams. Students’ geometric knowledge will be looked at as well to ensure they have a solid foundation regarding shapes, angles and the basic properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Students who attend Whitgift's Academic Enrichment Course will also benefit from elements of our year-round curriculum that have been developed and designed exclusively at Whitgift School. International Students will also have the opportunity to take part in our summer school project based classes called Progressive Skills in Action. In the afternoon, the students team up into classes with the C1 advanced English students and Whitgift students (see student ambassadors) . The students are put into small teams based on their age and level of English and work on exciting projects that have been designed to develop their teamwork, communication, and their ability to think critically and creatively.
